Agents don’t always say they’re agents. But their behavior does.
I recently did some analysis for my company, Fullstory, on a new kind of visitor: autonomous computer-use agents. I handed one of them, Muse, a real errand on a mock shopping site: buy fruit for a 20-kid halftime snack, delivered by Friday. It searched, compared, and filled a cart. Then I ran the same errand myself, like a good parent, so I could compare.
I figured spotting Muse would be easy. But Muse never introduced itself. No user agent string giving it away, no label announcing it was autonomous. I had to let its behavior do the talking. The article walks through which signals came up short, what finally told the agent apart from a person, and how you can start looking for agents on your own site. The agents may be quiet, but the data isn’t.
